Coastival - Festival of the Arts

A highly successful first Coastival event was held in February 2009, plans are already being made for the sequel, more information will be posted here when available.

Coastival 2009 - Music, Dance, Theatre and Arts festival
(February 13th – 15th 2009)

As the first event of its kind to be staged in Scarborough, Coastival 2009 - Bringing Yorkshire to the Seaside, will set the February half term holiday alight.

Coastival will be a three-day celebration of music, dance, theatre, film, visual arts, spoken word and comedy, culminating in a spectacular Festival of Light.

Drawing on local, regional and national talents, Coastival’s programme will appeal to everyone – from children through to young and older people.

With the support of patrons Sir Ben Kingsley and Sir Alan and Lady Ayckbourn, Coastival is set to be one of the major arts and cultural experiences of 2009.

Highlights will include a large scale outdoor event on the beach to launch the festival, including a lantern parade for children, a headline-grabbing music act and the Festival of Light, a spellbinding dance and light show featuring dance choreographed with light.

Supported by Arts Council funding, Coastival will be staged at various venues in and around Scarborough and the Spa complex will play a key role.

Events will also be held at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Woodend, Rotunda Museum, Scarborough Library and Information Centre, St Martin’s Church, Peasholm Park and even a disused shop and hotel room!  Visual art exhibitions are taking place across nine venues in the town.

The festival will be launched at a free concert in the Spa Grand Hall on Friday 13th February and that venue will also host jazz and world music headline performances.

An Acoustic Gathering will be staged in the Vitadome throughout the weekend and feature films will be shown in the Spa Theatre.  Late night music and film events will also be staged in the Spa bar.
